To the Top

I wanna be the very best, the best there ever was... Today I was reflecting on what I wanted to do with my career and I realized how big my plans are. Though, I understand it is great to have a plan and a dream, but flexiblitly and patience while carrying out a plan is very important too. This is what I was considering and what I have been thinking about doing for years...

I would love to get my bachelors degree in 2 more semesters. After that I would like to apply for my master's program and obtain my masters in Taxation accounting, though at this time I am unsure which area of accounting I would like to master in. While in my masters program it would be amazing experience to work for one of the big 4 accounting firms and find a position there as a CPA once I am done with my master's. I would love to work there for a few years, moving up the ladder and continuing to learn each and every day.

Then comes the tough part, do I build great relationships and attempt to start my own accounting firm or do I stay with the firm I am at and keep climbing the ladder?

My dream would be to open up my own, I envision a full service accounting firm that handles everything ranging from Taxes and Audits to AIS and Consulting. I would like to work hard and make it grow into a firm of highly knowledgeable and experienced accountants who are at the pinnacle of professionalism. But if none of that worked out I would not mind working hard for the Firm that I am working for at that time and providing them with the best possible service I could give, and who knows, maybe become a partner in the firm some day!

For now though I will keep working hard to acquire the knowledge I need to fulfill my dreams.

This is my son, he is more into finance than accounting, but that is okay, he will own the worlds finest stock brokerage one day or maybe be the CEO of a banking empire, who knows, Time will tell.

Intermidiate Accounting Chapter 1

Maybe it is a blessing that I didn't get in my international accounting class because now I can make sure to give my 4 classes the appropriate time to thoroughly learn everything I need to master the subject.

In chapter one of my text book, we cover the "Environment and Theoretical Structures of Financial Accounting". Basically we review whey we use financial accounting and how it provides information for the use of stakeholders in a company. We discuss the basics like debits and credits, T-accounts, and accrual versus cash basis accounting. Very nice to review for a week the shake off the summer rust. We also learned a little more in depth about GAAP guidelines versus IFRS guidelines and the imminent convergence of the two... Pretty exciting stuff if you are just entering the field of accounting if you ask me.

This class is going to be a lot of work, but I am very excited to learn as much as I can and hopefully master the information in my short 3 and a half month semester...

An Eventful Day

Well, it was my first day back to school and it was definitely strange. First thing that happened to me was at 12am last night a shot gun was fired at my neighbor's house, the bullet went straight through their wall and their stucco and went right into my siding. Thank the lord that it gold caught up un my exterior insulation I have behind my siding and I don't think that it damaged my wall beneath (it is a layer of stucco behind that, the old owner put vinyl siding up over the old stucco). So a police officer came by and explained the situation, it was an accident, but still this isn't to happen again.

So I am now down one hour of sleep, great!

Next I am almost late to work, that always stresses me out. Then at 8:00 am I was on the road, heading to school, and wouldn't you believe it....

Sorry for the small picture, stupid iphone. This is a Semi Truck, it says "LUCKY" on it; now that is pretty darn funny to me because I was certainly not lucky to be stuck behind him for the next 20 miles as he went 5 to 10 mph under the speed limit as I am trying to make a mad dash to my first day of school... But the great day didn't stop there.

Next I got to school had my first class and all was well. Then I went to my second class, the one I was on a waitlist for. I went in sat down and participated in the whole class, put when I went to get signed into the class I was told that no, "we will not add any wait list students", well that is freaking great. Thank you for letting so many of us sign up for a waitlist, in hopes that we will get in only to tell us after we just sat through a whole class session that we will not be added to the class. How Frustrating!

My other classes went fine, and at the end of the day I was posed with the option of taking Business Law to make up for the class that I couldn't get in (international accounting) and I said no. I'm not sure why, maybe it is because I was starting to fall asleep every time I sat down. Maybe I was just mad because the day I was so looking forward to kind of sucked. Or perhaps it was because I want a higher GPA and I know the business law is probably the hardest non-major business class.

All in all, it was a rough day. I am now sitting on my couch, after a finishing my homework, sulking in my own self pity, hahahaha... Oh well, tomorrow is a new day! I will preserver.

The Night before

We are all either where I am right now or we can remember what I am going through right now; the night before school. The mad dash to make sure you have everything you need and that everything is where it needs to be. It is a hectic night full of double, triple, and quadruple checking that you have the most basic things. You have to make sure you have your books, a notebook for each class, paper, pencil, pen, syllabus, class schedule, computer, lock for a locker, charger for laptop, lunch (thank you kylie), breakfast, and lots of coffee. But after lots of planning, this semester was different.

This time around I got everything well before I needed it and had it sitting on my desk ready to load up. My biggest problem was that it wont all fit in my backpack.... which is pretty tragic, but I will preserver.

My schedule tomorrow goes a little something like this...

3am - Wake up for work
4am - Clock on at The Home Depot
8am - Clock out and rush to School
9:10ish - Get to school
9:30 - Class Starts, Finance
11am - International Accounting
12:30 - Business Communications
2pm - Intermediate Accounting
3:30 - Human Resource Management
4:45 - Finally off, Time to drive home
5:15 - Arrive at home to my family
9pm - Sleep

Then I wake up and repeat, but with my other job instead of school... Busy days for the next few months.

Last Week of Summer

Well, it is that time of year, summer is over and school is back in session. This was my last week without studying until December 22. So the family and I tried our best to make the most of it! I was fortunate enough to open at work both Saturday and Sunday which was nice because I was off my 1 pm, leaving plenty of the day to hang out.

First we went to CSU Chico to pick up some books and get my parking pass. While we were there we had a nice lunch at chipotle! I must admit, the carnitas burrito is amazing and their guacamole is second to none. After lunch we went to get my wife, Kylie's, eye exam and new glasses.

Next we went to the fair, which is an annual tradition of ours. I got to strap my son Graham to my chest and wear him for a few hours and he loved it!

We especially love the live wood carving they do, it is amazing how skilled these guys are with their tools (mostly the chainsaw though).

Lastly we went to Costco, which for most people is a pain, but Kylie and I love it! It is amazing in there, hahaha. We always try to get everything that we need for an entire month, it usually works out pretty well. It was a rather large trip this time because we got plenty of food for Kylie to make me lunches for school.

What a nice week! Now we are at home, preparing for the big week ahead. I have Monday to polish the last of my chores off and then it is school for my on Tuesday!

Summer is Over

Hi, my name is Preston, I am 22 years old, and going to college to get my degree in Accounting. But I don't have your typical early 20's college experience. I got married almost 2 years ago and we are the proud parents of a 5 month old son, I also work two jobs to keep the bills paid and make sure that my wife is able to stay home and raise our son the proper way. My only problem is that I am taking 5 classes a semester at my University so that I can finally enter into my field of choice .

There is less than a week until school starts back up and I'm still in summer mode. At the beginning of the summer I was pretty sad that I wasn't able to get into summer classes at my school. But it turned out being okay because it allowed my to only work and that was a nice break, even if I was still working 55 hours a week. Over the summer I hung out at home a lot and played with my son, it was nice to have a lot of bonding time because in less than a week I will only have just a handful of time to spend with him and my wife. But a balanced life is what I strive for, therefore I will be sure to have family time every day. I also got to work in my shop (aka my garage, hahaha). Started to do a little remodel on it! I also was fortunate enough to be able to buy a few of my text books early this summer and read a few chapters out of each of them to make it a little easier to transition into the semester. Anyways that is about everything I did this summer and I can't wait to get to school next week, it is going to be a very good semester.

I am going to be posting a little bit every day, so if you would like to follow along please feel free to subscribe.
